Cat Power

The Greatest

Editor's Review:

Opening with the mournful piano of the title track, it would appear that The Greatest was picking up where Chan Marshall’s last album, the charmingly fragile coffee house rocker You Are Free, left off. But from there, Cat Power’s latest is thankfully a little more rhythm, and a lot less blues. “Living Proof,” for instance, carries a sweet soul swing that Marshall’s voice seems wellsuited for. More familiar sounding tracks like “Where Is My Love” and “Hate” kinda break the flow, but even in these moments, Marshall seems more confident. This may discourage those looking to reconnect with their favorite wallflower, but on the whole, it’s nice to hear this Cat with a little more strut in her stride.
