The latest edition of Late Night Tales is the handiwork of Scottish indie darlings Belle & Sebastian. Deftly piecing together the crafty B&S sound, the selections are a back catalog of tastes including ‘70s funk, contemporary indie rock, psychedelic, folk, bossanova and largely the incomparable harmonies of the Motown school. Alongside benchmarks like Johnny Cash’s “Ring of Fire” are basement-bin finds like Jimmy and Mama Yancey rolling out the “How Long Blues” or Brazilian Gal Costa’s tropical “Lost in the Paradise,” which charmingly show Belle & Sebastian’s love for their craft as opposed to, say, snobbery. It’s like receiving a mixtape from one of your favorite artists—oh wait! That’s exactly what it is!
