The Catheters

Editor's Review:

The musically lush and generally isolated Pacific Northwest is opening up a little and shedding some light on a growing trend in those parts: good ol’ fashioned, down and dirty rock ‘n’ roll that smacks of classic influence, but holds an edge that no matter what the decade keeps the sound fresh and raw. Bands like the Murder City Devils and Tight Bros From Way Back When lit the torch of national attention for this movement, and still carry it, while simultaneously passing it on to groups like The Catheters.

With a hard, take-no-shit attitude and a refreshing revival of what rock used to stand for, the five members of The Catheters—Brian (vocals), Derrick (guitar), Lars (guitar), Dave (drums) and Paul (bass)—are all under 21 years of age, and though the impetuousness of youth shines through in the lyrics (especially on \"Teenage Trash\" and \"The Kids Know How to Rock\"), the music is very much rooted in gutter punk and the raw glam-punk movement of the 1970s in which bands like New York Dolls and The Stooges (Iggy Pop) flourished, and had style long before \"glam\" became a dirty word.

On their eponymous full-length debut The Catheters kick out the rock jams, replete with catchy, nasty-sounding hooks and driving rhythms, screaming vocals and powerful words. All together, they’re a rock band more musically developed than their years would lead one to believe, and in the end, there’s no substitute for true energy and raw power, which these guys have in spades.
