Widespread Panic
Another Joyous Occasion
Editor's Review:
The latest effort from a new breed of Southern rockers once again exemplifies their casual, but powerful approach to music. Another Joyous Occasion is their eighth album to be released. It is also their second live album and the first released on their very own label, Widespread Records. Fortunately I own all of them, so I can tell you that album falls in line perfectly with the others. Each of their albums reveals a different aspect of the band, and this album further proves that these boys have yet to become content with their product, always finding new ways to push the bounds of their music. Another Joyous Occasion features a renowned crew from the Big Easy, The Dirty Dozen Brass Band, who lend their own breed of New Orleans Jazz in a total big band, big jam extravaganza which began at the infamous New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, continued on a U.S. tour in 1999 and, fortunately for us, ended up finding its way onto CD.
The album features Widespread classics such as "Fishwater," "Christmas Katie," "Weight of the World," and a most prized "Coconuts." Also included are a very fine rendition of the Stevie Wonder classic, "Superstition," and a blazing drum session. So if you're down with some funky grooves and grandmaster jams, I highly recommend getting your hands on this album.
