Paintin’ The Town Brown: Ween Live, ’90 -’98

Editor's Review:

Ween, fronted by brothers Gene and Dean Ween (who aren’t really brothers, nor are they named Gene and Dean Ween), has spawned a peculiar, but faithful and strong fan base. Almost invariably, if you’re caught in the Ween web, you’re stuck, especially if you’ve had the privilege of seeing them live.

With Paintin’ The Town Brown, Ween looks back over eight years on the road, from 1990 - ‘98. Line-ups have changed—at times, Ween has appeared with a full band, other times as the dynamic duo of Gener and Deaner backed solely by a DAT—and the repertoire has grown considerably. From a 1990 gig in Holland, "playing in front of 12 confused Dutch people," ("Mushroom Festival In Hell") to gigs from the group’s tour for their last album, The Mollusk, this live collection pretty much covers the spectrum of Ween music.

As one of the best and most diverse rock acts out there, Ween creates music that knows no boundaries. From the lush, homegrown flavor of the band’s country tunes ("Japanese Cowboy," "Mister Richard Smoker," "I Saw Gener Cryin’ In His Sleep," "She Fucks Me") to the gruesome sappiness of Ween’s brand of synth-pop ("Mister Would You Please Help My Pony," "Ode to Rene") to the good old, riff-rock strained, cynically twisted kind of power rock Ween live shows are best known for ("Voodoo Lady," "Awesome Sound," "Doctor Rock," "Marble Tulip Juicy Tree"), this is a shining example of what Ween can do live, and a long-awaited must-have for all fans.

As if all that wasn’t good enough, Paintin’ The Town Brown is a double album, the second disk containing about an hour of music restricted to just three songs: extremely extended versions of "Poopship Destroyer" and "Vallejo," and an expectedly humorous, acoustic version of "Puffy Cloud."
