Ween
The Mollusk
Editor's Review:
Ween pseudo-brothers Dean and Gene continue their ceaseless mission to
conquer, combine and destroy every genre known to mankind. Having run
funk through the ringer on 1994's Chocolate and Cheese and done
the Grand Ole Opry anything but proud on last year's 12 Golden Country
Greats, it was only a matter of time before they reverted to straight-forward,
speed-altered psychedelia and paid homage to fish.
Ween were wise enough to know that if you invent something so fuckin'
odd so as to defy comparisons, you'll be heralded as a groundbreaker,
even if you merely recorded some basic guitar tracks and twirled some
fancy manipulation knobs. Well, more ground has been broken, I guess.
From the very Donovan-esque title track to the demented Irishman-on-acid
lament "The Blarney Stone" to the folk-electronica instrumental "Pink
Eye (On My Leg)," The Mollusk reminds us again that the freshest sounds
aren't always the easiest to stomach.
For your giggling pleasure, here are some lyrical excerpts from The Mollusk:
"Have you ever made a flan and squished it in your hand?" (Polka Dot Tail);
"I lick my brain in silence / Rather squeeze my head instead / Midget
man provoking violence / Listen not to what I said" (Mutilated Lips).
