Tina Turner
Twenty Four Seven
Editor's Review:
She's dropped the last name for this CD -- it's just Tina now - like Cher, Madonna and God. But, she's 60 now — looking better than ever and still sounding great — so, let the woman do whatever the hell she wants.
"Whatever You Need," "All The Woman," "Without You," and "Twenty Four Seven," are the most funky and cut-loose on the record, featuring classic Tina Turner vocals, reminiscent of her gutsy 1960s sound. "All The Woman," is a catchy testament to being a real woman, instead of falling prey to the visions seen in magazines, while "Whatever You Need," and "Without You," focus on the traumas of love. Produced by Brian Rawling and Mark Taylor — the team behind Cher's Grammy award winning, single "Believe" — the first single, "When the Heartache Is Over," has a definite disco influence. "Don't Leave Me This Way," another song produced by Rawling and Taylor, also has a light disco beat, but is much more a ballad than "When The Heartache Is Over," and many of the other songs on the record. Synthesized instrumentation and discoed drum beats cover the record and Turner’s vocals are, generally, very tame and low. There are hardly any of the "Proud Mary," styled hollers that Turner is known for and flourishes in, which is sad. The record's best songs are not the ballads, but those that most closely mirror Turner's trademark sound of aggressive vocals and stomping beats. Those nice-girl-gone-naughty songs are the ones that have made Tina Turner one of our most treasured and idolized female performers.
