Cut Chemist

Future Primitive Sound Session Vol. 1

Editor's Review:

Five turntables, crates of records, a hyped crowd and two of the most innovative turntablists equals an interesting meeting of the minds and skill. Shortkut, member of the wax-wrecking crew the Invisibl Skratch Piklz, and Cut Chemist, member of Jurassic 5 and Ozomatli, met up at the Future Primitive Sound Session in San Francisco about a year ago, and this release was the product. While using sets and beats that were familiar to fans, they cut it up a whole new way and fed off of each others presence in the process. While there is a whole lot of scratching going on throughout the sets, the listener does get a peek at some juggling skills, original samples and a Jurassic 5 verse.

What makes this recording so amazing is that it was completely unrehearsed, recorded live, at one of the many dynamic shows that go on at the Future Primitive Sound Session. Shortkut and Cut Chemist get into some intricate scratch patterns over old-school, unreleased and well know beats. Cut Chemist goes into his remix of DJ Shadow's "The Number Song" and remixes it further, and dices up "Lesson 4" off of Return of DJ Vol. 1 and "Lesson 6" off of Deep Concentration compilation. Shortkut's skill of "scratching so fast it makes you wanna itch" holds true throughout the 90-minute-long session. The feeling of the "live recording" is deepened by the crowd noise, which was picked up by the styluses on the turntables.
