Flight of the Conchords

The Distant Future

Editor's Review:

It’s difficult not to compare Flight of the Conchords to Tenacious D. Both are rock/comedy duos and both have had a series on HBO and both have plenty of luck with the ladies — at least they’d like to think so. However, the similarities really end there. Whereas the D celebrated the pomp and circumstance of rock, the Conchords take a more soulful approach.

Consisting of two New Zealanders — Bret McKenzie and Jermaine Clement — Flight of the Conchords have a wonderfully matter-of-fact sense of humor that’s as deadpan as their accents. Conversely, their music is extremely expressive and downright sexy. Their latest EP, The Distant Future, is just a precursor to a full-length album due out next year, but for those who may not be familiar with the group — or as rabid as the duo’s superfan Mel (played by Kristen Schaal) — it’s a must-have. “Business Time” starts the EP off with a heavy dose of the Conchords’ signature white-boy funk, with Clement’s deep register at the lead. “If You’re Into It” is brief, bouncy, but addictive, and may be the most apathetic love song ever written. Also included are three live tracks, one being an example of the group’s onstage banter, which Clement describes as a professional form of talking. This is just a taste of what the Conchords have to offer, but it’s still pretty sweet.
