Editor's Review:

Leave it to Dan "The Automator" Nakamura to extend the wild underground success he found with the Dr. Octagon record. The Bay Area production genius spearheaded that album, layering the hilariously disturbingly words of rapper Kool Keith (as Dr. Octagon) and the lightening scratches of DJ Q-Bert over dark and futuristic beats. This time, the raps are provided by Hieroglyphics' great granddaddy Del tha Funkee Homosapien (as Deltron) and the turntable work is courtesy of Canadian DJ Kid Koala, who takes on the persona of Skiznod the Boy Wonder. A whole host of others hip-hoppers join the fun, including MC Paul Barman, Sean Lennon, Prince Paul, Mark Nishita, Peanut Butter Wolf and many, many more - all playing crazy characters.

Del's rapping is dope - there's no question about his skills - but in comparing this release to Octagon, it becomes apparent that Del has to actually think about being futuristic and weird; Kool Keith just is. Other than that, Del employs interesting cadence to his rhymes, and finds lyrical themes and lines that fit nicely into the overall Deltron theme.

The production on Deltron 3030 is where the release shines. The sounds contained herein are nothing short of amazing, a heady mixture of classical loops, eerily lilting vocal samples and otherworldly, futuristic sounds and melodies bolstered by thick, hearty beats that hit deep lows and reach crisp, clean highs. Soft melodic interludes permeate the entire track listing, which, all in all, makes up a pretty solid record.
