Thrice

The Alchemy Index Vols. 1 & 2: Fire & Water

Editor's Review:

The Alchemy Index just might be the most intriguing concept album of our generation. And it’s no wonder that Thrice, one of the most experimental bands on the scene right now, are musicians behind it. Based on the four elements (earth, wind, fire and water), The Alchemy Index is a four-part culmination of where Thrice has been in their career and where they wish to steer their future. Available in two installments (the latter, Earth & Air, is set for release in the spring of 2008), The Alchemy Index is Thrice’s attempt to paint a thematic feel for the conflicting elements — "Fire" being their fiercest and heaviest work, "Water" drowning in digital abundance, "Earth" reverting to a raw folk feel and "Air" capturing the ambient side of the group. Recently disjoining from their major label Island Records, Thrice took it upon themselves to do things their own way, completely and independently, producing the four EPs with Vagrant Records kindly stepping in to distribute them.

Although some fans scorn Thrice for changing their sound so broadly over the years, this, in fact, is the very reason Thrice is one of the most progressive and influential bands in modern rock ‘n’ roll.
