The Karl Denson Trio

Lunar Orbit

Written By: Dustin Bennett

Editor's Review:

Karl Denson is one of those few jazz musicians who can transcend the conformity of the genre while still maintaining a traditional aesthetic. These days, the saxophonist/flutist has moved beyond the realms of his Tiny Universe with his new trio, and has posted up somewhere in Lunar Orbit. Heavily spaced-out keys, rock-tinged drums and Denson’s virtuosic lungs make for a technically proficient brand of get-down galactic funk that no theory-minded individual can scoff at. Check out “The Plain Truth,” “By Appointment Only” and the title track for clear examples of how Denson keeps it real on both sides of the musical fence.
