the Dwarves

The Dwarves Are Young And Good Looking

Editor's Review:

Known for playing fully naked, Dwarves, the hardcore but melodic punk/proto-grunge band, cut three CDs in the '80s for Sub Pop Records, of which Blood, Guts and Pussy was voted one of the best 100 albums of the last ten years by The Alternative Press. Then, being the punks that they are, they faked guitarist Hewhocannotbenamed's death. Sub Pop was not amused and consequently dropped the band. Where's the label's sense of humor?

Now ensconced at Epitaph Records, Dwarves are back, in prime form with a new CD, The Dwarves Are Young And Good Looking. The Misfits-like hard-edged sound is matched by the sometimes vulgar, sometimes comical lyrics that can be understood even when screamed. Check out these lyrics from "Demonica": "just like a miracle/in chains and Clearasil/stands the woman of my dreams/and just thirteen/Bo-Peep erotica/my sweet Demonica/the devil's in her pants."

Other unabashed tunes include "Everybodies Girl," "Pimp," and my favorite, "You Gotta Burn," an old-school rocknroll-sounding tune that again brings The Misfits to mind.

All you hardcore punks know what to do: the rest of you, go buy it!
