Busta Rhymes & J Dilla

Dillagence

Editor's Review:

J Dilla was one of the best producers in hip-hop. Period. Widely regarded as a musical genius, he worked with many influential artists, including the Roots, Madlib, Common, Erykah Badu and many others. Along with Ahmir “?uestlove” Thompson, D’Angelo, James Poyser and others, he helped form the Soulquarians music collective in the late ‘90s, which produced a number of critically acclaimed albums. J Dilla passed away in 2006, but his legacy continues, most recently with a tribute by Mick Boogie and Busta Rhymes in Dillagence.

J Dilla has been a part of every single one of Busta Rhymes’ solo albums, and the friendship that they shared bleeds through the music. Although Busta brings great rhymes, and recruits the likes of Rah Digga, Talib Kweli, Q-Tip and other guests, it’s easy to see that the star of the show is the production, created solely by Dilla. About the project, Busta said, “Dilla left so much incredible music behind with me personally. It’s almost like he knew I was a vessel for him, and would be able to continue to champion his movement.” Collaborating with esteemed mixtape producer Mick Boogie for the project, Busta has created a unique piece of art that’s easily appreciated by longtime Dilla fans, and serves as an excellent introduction to the man behind the music. Commentary by Dilla’s mother, Ma Dukes, and Busta himself on nearly every track gives insight into the life of a truly great musician.
