Port O'Brien

The Wind and the Swell

Editor's Review:

Take Modest Mouse crossed with Sufjan Stevens and maybe mix in a little of the vocals of Mates of State or Immaculate Machine and you will have Port O’Brien’s The Sea and the Swell. Although roughly made, the album is creative and enjoyable. Completely acoustic, Port O’Brien plays soft rock with a strong folk vibe. A slide guitar and banjo bring a back-porch feel to the record. The songs range from ferocious to tender with passionate lyrics inspired by lead singer Van Pierszalowski’s summers spent on his father’s fishing boat in Alaska. Port O’Brien (named after the town where Pierszalowski’s parents met) is currently touring the West Coast — catch them if you can.

Bio[+]
Port O'Brien frontman Van Pierszalowski was born and raised in Cambria, CA, but spent most of his summers in a fishing village on Kodiak Island in Alaska. He took the name for his band from the abandoned cannery site where his parents met in the '60s. Port O'Brien formed in 2005, but despite their short time as a band and youth (the average age of the group's members is just 21), they've already shared stages with scene heavyweights such as Bright Eyes.
