Wu-Tang Clan
8 Diagrams
Editor's Review:
Count me among the ranks of the skeptical when I heard that Wu-Tang Clan was releasing another studio album. Music lovers of all genres are used to groups getting together after a long hiatus as older, wiser and unable to recreate the synergy that they once possessed. Couple this with the infighting between members as of late, and a new album seems less than appetizing.Despite these negative factors, the Clan has managed to create a record that’s not half bad. 8 Diagrams opens with the dark humming and murky drums of “Campfire,” while Method Man, Cappadonna and Ghostface kill the beat with their grimy wordplay.
While it doesn’t capture the trademark Wu Tang sound, “The Heart Gently Weeps” is a notable song on the album, featuring a rendition of the Beatles’ “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” with Erykah Badu on vocals and Red Hot Chili Peppers’ John Frusciante and Dhani Harrison (son of the late George Harrison) on guitar.
Of course, there are gritty samples from old kung-fu movies littered throughout the track list, stringing the themes of “kindness, justice, faith and courage” along the soundscapes created by the RZA. Unfortunately, Ghostface is absent on “Life Changes,” the O.D.B tribute at the end of the album. It’s too bad that the inner feuds have gotten in the way of honoring the fallen warrior. It’s not 36 Chambers good, but it’s still a good album.
