Otep

The Ascension

Written By: Mike Kieran

Editor's Review:

After a six-month delay and a split from their former label, Otep has finally released The Ascension. Actually, little on the album manages to ascend. Sure, it explodes with energy, angst and ferocity, but the songs aren’t catchy or memorable. Diehard fans will enjoy more of the same formula, but this album may disappoint headbanger purists. Lead singer Otep Shamaya’s voice is the beating heart of the band. Her throat-shredding vocals energize the music, but the instrumentalism is flat, almost restrained. Several songs on the album were co-written by Mudvayne guitarist Greg Tribbett. Soft interludes on ”Milk of Regret” and the hidden track “Andrenochrome Dreams” highlight Shamaya’s lyrics, which seem perhaps more pretentious than poignant. The Ascension is formidable, yet somewhat forgettable.
