Eminem
The Slim Shady EP
Editor's Review:
Now let’s all sit down and listen to the story of the white rapper who
doesn’t suck. His name is Eminem and to tell you the truth, he has one of the sickest
flows I have heard in a while. He hails from Detroit and has just signed a major label
deal with Aftermath Entertainment (Dr. Dre’s Interscope imprint). Following up his
underground hit Slim Shady EP, Eminem has released a long anticipated album of 20
raw to the bone cuts that will make your blood curdle and your parents want to throw it in
the garbage.
Produced by West Coast rap pioneer producer and former NWA member, Dr. Dre,
Eminem’s debut has already started to draw critical praise as well as concern for its
brutal, misogynistic, drug-abusing and gay-bashing lyrical intensity. Hardcore Eminem fans
know that he’s prepared to take any flak thrown his way, and that his attitude
towards these down lookers can best be summed up in the rapper’s first single,
"Just Don’t Give a Fuck." And that’s just it, he doesn’t give a
fuck.
"’97 Bonnie and Clyde" is a song that deals with a trip to the beach,
where Eminem has his little daughter help him throw the baby’s mother into a lake
after he has just slit her throat. One of the line is "Mommy, she’s taking a
little nap in the trunk/ Oh that smell, daddy must have run over a skunk." And on
"My Fault," Eminem has to deal with some freaky rave chick who has eaten too
many mushrooms and is tripping out, talking to plants and chewing her tongue.
In the end, it is a good purchase if you’re not easily offended. Eminem’s
flow is smoother than smooth and his lyrics will leave you wondering "How did he do
that?" or, "Why’d he do that?!" Until then, don’t let your folks
get a hold of this one.
