Crunk Hits vol. 4

Written By: Ky Junkins

Editor's Review:

About a third of the way through Crunk Hits Vol. 4, this once-promising genre appeared to have breathed its last interesting grunt. Leave it to Lil’ Jon, the original King of Crunk, to prove “crunk ain’t dead,” hooking up with Three 6 Mafia for the compellingly grown up “Act A Fool.” LJ proves sandwiching smart, clear raps between heavy rock guitar riffs and bottom-of-the-belly chant calls can still get the club sweaty. Wyclef Jean lends his instantly recognizable Haitian influence to the Ying Yang Twins on a mediocre “Dangerous,” showing partnership potential, but the Twins haven’t really scored since “Get Low.” A pleasantly surprising inclusion is Chamillionaire’s “Ridin’” with Krayzie Bone. The disc is decent, but the art form is slipping.

Also known as the Mixtape Messiah, Chamillionaire is just one example of how to make it in the record industry. Selling tapes out of his car, the Houston-based MC built a name for himself without the help of a record label. In 2005, he released his major label debut with Universal Motown.
