Chris Walla
Field Manual
Editor's Review:
On Field Manual, Death Cab For Cutie’s secret weapon is afforded the opportunity to showcase the wares that have added so much depth to northwest independent rock over the last 10 years. Chris Walla’s debut solo album starts slow with the gospel-electro “Two-Fifty,” but by the next track, “The Score,” you’re privy to the early ‘90s school of 2/4 chord progression and achingly catchy choruses (a la Pearl Jam’s “Hail, Hail”). It’s in these moments that the album bubbles over with foamy layers of instrumentation and superb production. Walla’s voice is rough around the edges, and it’s obvious he’s been influenced by the melodic cadence of fellow Death Cab-ian Ben Gibbard, but Field Manual isn’t coattail rehash; it’s just a great record dripping with relevant social commentary.Write Your Own Review
