Sheryl Crow

Detours

Written By: Jana Selig

Editor's Review:

Sheryl Crow’s sixth studio album, Detours, reflects globally and on Crow herself. Crow’s lyrics are maternal, religious, hopeful and at times political. Spaced between them are monotonous “ohs” and “yeah, yeah, yeahs” (good example in “Gasoline”). Disappointingly, this album does not show the powerful, playful vocals that made Crow a nine-time Grammy Award-winning singer/songwriter. However, Detours has several excellent acoustic intros, such as in “Lullaby For Wyatt” and “Drunk With The Thought of You.” The up-tempo, clap-along beat in “Out Of Our Heads” gives it the carefree and anthemic quality one would expect from such an artist. Detours doesn’t meet initial expectations, yet has individual flair, such as with the Arabic lyrics sung by Ahmed Al Hirmi in “Peace Be Upon Us.”
