Dengue Fever

Venus on Earth

Written By: Dustin Bennett

Editor's Review:

After much acclaim followed 2005’s Escape from Dragon House, LA-based Khmer rock sextet Dengue Fever had their work cut out for them in terms of a follow-up record. Triumphantly, Venus on Earth is an improvement on what was already good. Spacious arrangements, mature production and contrived songwriting have resulted in a wholly enjoyable collection of psychedelia-infused, Cambodian-pop/rock tunes. Chhom Nimol’s melodies are entrancing, whether she’s singing in English or not, and Zac and Ethan Holtzman’s guitar and keyboards bring a finely tuned “east meets west” medium to the songs, respectively. The purest examples of this are in “Integratron,” where a pulsing rhythm drives Nimol’s fluid melody, and in the irresistible album opener, “Seeing Hands."
