Scott Reynolds and the Steaming Beast
Adventure Boy
Editor's Review:
I can’t write tunes this good, so I probably shouldn’t say shit… But! After the first 30 seconds of Adventure Boy, I had to try not to get upset at Scott Reynolds for being so upbeat. After five listens, I almost feel ambivalent. So things are getting better. The Steaming Beast (it’s a pleasure to type those words) moves rather seamlessly in nodding from forward garage rock and soothing country while blending a subtle sonicscape (thanks to the work of Steven Drozd of the Flaming Lips) above it all.
What grates Reynolds’s music is that it occasionally sounds like he’s reaching for listeners. You get the same thing from Merlot wine, and any band that can be placed in several different used bins. But then again, this is the sound of a very broad group of musicians. So you may endure the atrocious glee of Raffi that leaks though their melodies. At times you’re left spun as they turn around and sing you a lonesome campfire chorus and drop the milky slide guitars and synthesizers like it was second nature. It’s a toss up—like hearing the voice of an old acquaintance, sometimes you can’t tell if you really feel what’s being said, but it’s probably just easier to enjoy it.
Still, I swear to gawd if my computer shuffles to that ninth track again I’m gonna leap out this window just to hear myself splat.
