The Feel Good Record of the Year

Written By: Noah G. Prado

Editor's Review:

While the pristine vocal and production quality via help from the legendary Bill Stevenson (Black Flag, Descendents, ALL) shines through on The Feel Good Record of the Year, NUFAN’s emblematic, fiery and heartfelt approach is what makes the record worth listening to. With over 20 years and nine studio albums under their studded belts, NUFAN are still a top draw among alternative festivals, which includes the Vans Warped Tour, not to mention being handpicked tour mates of huge new wave punk rock acts NOFX and more recently Sum 41. Finally solidified in their current lineup after losing Chris Shiflett to the Foo Fighters, NUFAN have emerged unscathed even in the microscope of 2008.

Never bashful about pressing world issues as well as the woes of love, lyricist and guitarist Tony Sly laces into corporate media and, well…society in the record’s opening and far and away best track “Biggest Lie.” Though the song isn’t much of a progression musically, the faultless harmonies and melodies leave little room for a topper in the remaining 13 tracks. Not to say there aren’t strides taken—an acoustic and piano driven number “Sleeping Between Trucks” and an electronic drum-riddled “Yours to Destroy” give the compilation a deeper, spirited ambiance. It’s good to know that some of the same guys who we used to headbang to when we were 16 are still out there kicking nards.
