The Rough Guide to Ultimate Musical Adventures

Written By: Dustin Bennett

Editor's Review:

The phrase “ultimate musical adventures” is pretty damn enticing. Visions begin to circulate of steaming jungles, desert oases and far Eastern marketplaces. Shortly after, however, it becomes clear that the actual purpose of this collection is to turn people on to the other albums in the Rough Guide series. Regardless, it still makes a pretty interesting listen. Cuban Cowboys’ “El Capitan” is gruff, gritty and almost as groovin’ as Dengue Fever’s psychedelic Cambodian-pop on “We Were Gonna.” The belly dance/salsa/flamenco fusion of Rhany’s “Chan Chan,” and the James Brown-meets-Booker T. Jones soul-funk of West Africa’s Geraldo Pino & The Heart Breaks beckons your shakable limbs to move in a never-before-seen fashion. Definitely adventurous.
