TopR
The Marathon of Shame
Editor's Review:
TopR has been in the game for about 15 years now. He’s spent time as a member of the Lords graf crew and Gurp City and has continuously put out some of the best underground hip-hop you’ve never heard. Dude’s easily one of the most slept-on artists of our time. It’s rare that anyone outside of the Bay Area knows of him.The Marathon of Shame is his best work to date. From the insane artwork (courtesy of Alex Pardee!) to the revealing DVD, there are absolutely no flaws to be found. DJ Quest lays the beats for TopR to showcase his mix of satirical, self-deprecating rhymes and his thoughtful, poised takes on modern society. “Puttin’ squares in their place like Tetris” and “…we all can agree that one should follow their dreams / but these days, artists are rewarded for mediocrity” are two of my favorite lines, though you’ll probably find yourself hitting the reverse button more than once on almost every track just to fully grasp the lyrical content.
The DVD offers incredible insight into his life as a runaway teen, graf artist and battle emcee and presents the viewer with some great live footage as well.
But, in the words of TopR himself, “…album number five. One more fuckin’ album that you’re not gonna buy — or ever hear of.” Fifteen amazing songs and a DVD? You can’t go wrong.
