Cherry Poppin' Daddies

Susquehanna

Editor's Review:

The latest album from the Cherry Poppin’ Daddies shines first and foremost for its bold combination of styles and reckless straddling of genres. The album is an odd jumble of musical styles and syncretism. “Hi and Lo” and “Blood Orange Sun” are ska, with various added rhythms and instruments. “Bust Out” is a mishmash of styles, and “White Trash Toodle oo” is a fast swing track, reminiscent of “Zoot Suit Riot.” The wild creativity doesn’t save all tracks on the album, notably “Julie Grave,” but they can’t all be winners. “Roseanne” is another notable track, with Flamenco guitar and castanets. Susquehanna is unprecedented and outrageous, but doesn’t hold up very well to repeated listening.

Bio[+]

Cherry Poppin' Daddies is an American rock band formed in 1989 in Eugene, Oregon. Although the band's work finds them experimenting with many genres, mostly swing, rock, funk, and ska, they are best known for their contributions to the swing revival movement in the late 1990s, namely their multi-platinum album Zoot Suit Riot and its title track, their first (and only) hit single. They are also known for their Oregon-based cult following and lively stage shows.
