Anthems For the Damned
Editor's Review:
Having built a reputation for virtually reinventing the group with every album — first mid-‘90s alt-grunge, then acoustic-based pop, followed by edgy hard-rock — Filter's Richard Patrick just may have found a happy medium with his fourth release, Anthems For The Damned. Taking bits of what worked from previous albums (including his trademark scathing vocals), Patrick has assembled a cohesive collection of thoughtful, driven tunes. The album opens with the rock-radio-ready "Soldiers Of Misfortune" and continues along a very digestible path. In fact, the final two cuts may be the strongest. The soothing balladry of “Only You” sneaks up when it's not expected, and the punctuating "Can't Stop This" is a graceful album-ending instrumental. For Filter fans, Anthems is sufficient.Write Your Own Review

Bio[+]Filter began crawling through the dark undergrowth of electronic rock in 1995 when the group released their debut album Short Bus (Reprise Records) which included the hit single, “Hey Man, Nice Shot.” The group was originally founded by ex-Nine Inch Nails touring member Richard Patrick (vocals, guitars, bass, programming, drums) and Brian Liesegang (programming, guitars, keyboards, drums), however Liesegang left the group in 1997. Filter expanded from its frosty industrial exterior with the release of Title Of Record in 1999 which featured the emotionally exuberant breakthrough single, “Take A Picture.” Although the album featured exotic rhythms and bohemian acoustic guitar strums, the computer is still Patrick’s main composition tool. Their third album The Amalgamut is set for release in 2002.
