Whitechapel

This is Exile

Editor's Review:

Whitechapel is heavy, there's no question about that. There's no question about their technical proficiency either, because these dudes from Knoxville can really play. Their down-tuned, three-guitar attack comes off tight and precise, but with enough raw energy to avoid that computer-perfect sound, and drummer Kevin Lane's feet fly on the verge of utter chaos the entire time; but he still knows how to make it slow and punishing during the breakdowns, which is a rarity.

The vocals of frontman Phil Bozeman are plenty pissed-off sounding, having a total range from shrieking highs to cookie-monster lows, and fill the role of the modern day new-school death metal singer to perfection. If you like music that will knock your dick in the dirt, Whitechapel is for you. Comparisons to other bands in this genre like Suicide Silence, The Faceless and Catalepsy, are deserved to a certain degree. However, Whitechapel doesn't quite have enough emotion behind their delivery nor unique signature parts to really set themselves apart. Their Metal Blade Records debut This Is Exile is reflective of this, as it starts out on fire but doesn't quite have enough interesting turns to sustain it to the end. Despite its slight shortcomings, overall Exile is definitely worth your money, and will probably be surprise you at how long it ends up staying in your CD or MP3 player.

Bio[+]

Whitechapel was formed in February in 2006 by Phil Bozeman, Brandon Cagle, and Ben Savage. Shortly after the idea of the band was formed the remaining members Alex Wade, Gabe Crisp, and Derek Martin were added to the line up, and recorded their first demos in March of that year. They named themselves after the English city of Whitechapel, the location of the Jack the Ripper murders.
