The Rough Guide to the Music of Hungarian Gypsies

Written By: Bill Kelvin

Editor's Review:

Though Gypsies are as persecuted a people as most can think of, the music collected here implies a brilliantly playful culture. Simple acoustic guitar riffs bounce along, coated by words smooth as creek stones. On many songs, little yips and scats blanket the lyrics, begging for sing-alongs — the campfires these people must have! On some tracks an emphasis on brass, like that commonly found in Latin music, creates a powerful and evocative sound. The techniques have clearly been formed through generations of pious practice, evidenced by the layering of sounds, as super-tight guitar notes twinkle over horns. One group even throws in some hip-hop record scratches to show the Gypsies ain’t been sleeping.
