The Brakes
Tale of Two Cities
Editor's Review:
You can hear The Brakes trying to break out of their soft-rock chrysalis here, but it's obvious their heart just isn't there. "Into the Ground" comes closest, veering into peppy indie-pop with a bouncy retro tune reminiscent of early Papas Fritas, and that's almost enough to make you forget that the rest of the album sounds like muzak. Two kinds of people will enjoy mellow, spongy tracks like "Cigarettes in the Rain" and ersatz-Simon and Garfunkel folk melodies like "Sister Mary": your first-year roommate who thinks that looping yacht rock will trick women into thinking he's cultured and your parents. Still, you can hear that this is where The Brakes are in their element, and you can't help but like a soft-rock band that's comfortable in its smoothness.Write Your Own Review
