French Kicks

Swimming

Written By: Noah G. Prado

Editor's Review:

Vagrant Records has really branched out over the years with the signings of outlandish acts in hopes to capture a wider fan base. Finally, they’ve hit the jackpot with French Kicks, whose second Vagrant effort, Swimming, shines with honesty and depth. It’s easy to see that the New York City quartet knows exactly how they want to play and are able to execute it on tape. Apparently, the group used a lot of first and second takes as final products, not that you can tell. “Abandon,” the album’s opener, soars with pristine harmonies, and, like many of the tracks, boasts sparkling melodies that stick with the listener. Drummer-turned-lead-vocalist Nick Stumpf recalls early Velvet Teen-style vocals, only slightly more buried and watery.
