Whether or not an album can stand the test of time is perhaps the largest barometer for a given band’s relevancy to a new generation. The writing duo of Eric Gaffney and Lou Barlow couldn’t have been more diametrically opposite, but to an ocean of admirers of a new movement in music called “indie” (when it actually meant bands on indie labels), the sticky sweet-and-sour folk from Barlow and the explosive, psychedelic fuzz-punk from Gaffney was too bizarre to ignore.

Originally released on Sub Pop in 1993, Bubble & Scrape was arguably the album that etched Sebadoh absolutely and finally into the punk rock tablet, selling 10,000 copies in its first week and cementing tracks like “Soul And Fire” and “Old Daze” as modern classics. Bubble was the last album to feature Gaffney, and was also the record which brought Barlow out of a post-breakup depression; fittingly, the angst and austere bluster pulsing through the lo-fi mold serve as a touchstone that many bands have tried to mimic only to fail hard and fast at. It’s imagining the trio holed up in a slaughterhouse to record both blazing noisy speed punk, then slowing it down with an introspective love lamentation, all wrapped up in that late ’80s confusion of highly innovative bands hailing from Massachusetts instead of NYC or LA that give it an air of mysticism. Sebadoh’s legacy stands as one of the most imaginative, inspiring and implosive of the nascent years of grunge, and this reissue stands up as straight as a tuning fork in Jell-O.
