Dr. Dog

Fate

Editor's Review:

Since the release of Easy Beat in 2005, Dr. Dog has carved their names deep into the cozy niche of revival rock ‘n’ roll. And now, with the release of Fate, Philadelphia’s pop-rock golden boys are back again.

Consistently molded somewhere between The Beatles and The Band, Dog’s latest effort finds the group taking strides away from the up-tempo, peppy hooks that fans have become particularly familiar with. Instead, Fate draws heavily on mid- and down-tempos, conveying a considerably more somber lyrical attitude. Where We All Belong might have felt like a collection of singles thrown into a track list, Fate strives for a more cohesive blend, flowing from song to song with the ease of a Pocono stream. Guitarist Scott McMicken’s nasal charm is ever-present on “The Breeze” and “From,” assisted by lush, complex harmonies, creating a bit of nostalgia that would make Brian Wilson grin from ear to ear. Bass player Toby Leaman leaps forth in full vocal force on “Army of Ancients,” unleashing the soulful rasp that has become endlessly endearing to the Dog faithful. On keys, Zach Miller plays with taste throughout and provides the instrumental meat for “100 Years.”

If Fate symbolizes any one thing, it’s that Dr. Dog has more to offer than a single dimension.
