RZA
Digi Snacks
Editor's Review:
A decade since youngsters dreamed of Wu-Tang Clan tattoos, they may now wonder what happened to the once-prosperous East Coast rap collective. Prince Rakeem, aka the RZA, aka Bobby Digital, orchestrated the Clan’s rise to dominance. Considered a super-producer by all, but mediocre lyricist by some, RZA’s unique verbal contributions always perfectly spiced Wu-Tang’s incredible heyday tracks. His initial solo effort after Wu-Tang exploded onto the scene, Bobby Digital in Stereo, was an innovative and stimulating take on the Wu mythos, full of his chirping sci-fi lingo.Regrettably, like the Clan’s prodigious fall, Digi Snacks disappoints. The beats are nice, but do not stand out the way RZA’s old stuff did. He’s got some good lines with fresh pop culture references, but the flows feel like he’s uninterested or doesn’t have the depth for a solo album. Sadly, his old trademark gravel voice is replaced by a smooth monotony that’s hardly engaging. However, Robert Diggs still knows how to sample. He must’ve dug through crazy crates for some of these tracks’ window dressing, such as the eerie amalgam of motherly and loverly, inviting listeners to relax on “Good Night.”
The most surprising aspect of the album is the dearth of Wu-Tang members; only Inspectah Deck checks in. Oddly, a lot of the cameos are West Coast chest-thumpers — maybe RZA spies a niche. With all his dope movie soundtracks, Bobby Digital will definitely eat well, but probably not from this album.
