Insolence
Poisonous Philosophy
Editor's Review:
They’re hardcore yet slanted towards spirituality; rooted in metal but steeped in the DJ ethic — they incorporate hip-hop, jungle, reggae and classic American rock into the mix; and they have two dope-ass singers, one soulful and one more hardcore. They’re San Jose, CA six-piece Insolence, and they’re ready for the world.
Their second, self-produced effort, Poisonous Philosophy, has this band poised for the big time. Fresh off of a previously-taped performance on Jimmy and Doug’s Farmclub.com (y’know, it’s on Monday nights after the WWF on the USA Network; drummer Mando wore Chico metal band Oddman’s T-shirt during a taping of the home-surroundings portion of the show) where they performed the first single off of Poisonous Philosophy, "Third Eye Satellite," Insolence tastefully laces driving metal with hip-hop rhythms ("Head 2 Head"), fuses chunks of grind core mayhem with soulful funk ("Natural High") and synthesizes reggae, and a hard core world-beat ("Terrorist Dub").
Poisonous Philosophy also offers more straightforward stuff, too, like the straight-up rapping of the album’s title track, the serious DJ mixing on "Mad Science" or the rapier riffs of "Gaffled."
