Wyclef Jean

The Ecleftic

Editor's Review:

It's hard not to like Wyclef. In his sophomore release, The Ecleftic, Wyclef treats the listener to a wide range of musical styles that you'd expect from a release by this member of The Fugees. Filled with the genre-blending sounds that Wyclef is known for, The Ecleftic is packed with 19 tracks featuring guest appearances by musicians ranging from Kenny Rogers to Youssou N'Dour to Mary J. Blige and even Earth Wind & Fire.

Tracks like "Where Fugees At?" and "Thug Angels" stand out in front of the pack. The low point of the record is the appearance by the WWF's The Rock. Why The Rock is on the Wyclef album is beyond my understanding - I would have been happy with an 18-track disc instead of hearing The Rock act like a tough guy while he yells on "It Doesn't Matter." The record ends with a cover of Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here," the classic song reborn with soft guitars and an easy-rolling drum machine beat. Asserting his own style throughout and closing the record on a high note, Wyclef has done it again.
