Jill Scott

Who Is Jill Scott? Words and Sounds Vol. 1

Editor's Review:

Based on the strength of this album's first two singles - the strong and soulful "Getting' In the Way," and "Long Walk," a sunny, playful and masterfully written piece - I fell in love with Jill Scott. As a vocalist, Scott's amazing voice can hit those cat-woman-like purrs and hisses reminiscent of Erykah Badu, but Scott is so much less pretentious on the mic; and even her highest notes are so much more laid back and comfortable. She has this uncanny ability to impart such a heavy feeling in the music, delivered with poise, punctuality and a truck-load of soul, and with co-executive producing credits going to Jeff Townes (a.k.a. DJ Jazzy Jeff), the music definitely has ass - that smooth, bottom end soulful anchor that digs into your center and gets you moving slowly from the inside out. That's what I'm talkin' 'bout.
