Le Tigre
From the Desk of Mr. Lady
Editor's Review:
At first glance, it may appear that Le Tigre is a member o the Lilith
set: an all girl band - ex-Bikini Kill frontwoman Kathleen Hanna, video
maker Sadie Benning and 'zine writer Johanna Fateman - whose aesthetic
is as firmly planted in girl power as it is in indie hipness. But this
trio has no place among the wispy solo guitar and piano music that comes
from the Lilith stage. Le Tigre finds it roots in punk rock, albeit a
most certainly nontraditional take on the genre. Blending electronic beats
and other inorganic accompaniment with live instruments, Le Tigre takes
the music itself into interesting, uncharted new territory.
From the Desk of Mr. Lady is the second release from this trio,
a seven song EP that begins with "Get Off the Internet," a repetitive
but cheerily bouncy jam, featuring piano and reverbed guitar strains masked
by multiple vocals that chime in with some kind of wonderfully fucked
up harmony. Songs like "Bang Bang" and "They Want Us to Make a Symphony
out of the Sound of Women Swallowing Their Own Tongues" get their points
across with liberal amounts of studio tinkering and sample layering. Other
Tracks, like "Yr Critique" and "Mediocrity Rules," rely on dirty, hard-charging
guitar riffs to do the job, while "Gone B4 Yr Home" is a tongue-in-cheek
synth pop cut. The future of grrrl rock? Sure. Really cool in a dorky,
punk rock kind of way? Absolutely.
