Marilyn Manson
Holywood
Editor's Review:
This CD is filled with the same formula as usual. These songs are the
familiar Manson we love; the first songs are admirable and have a strong
message. The middle songs are pop-y (i.e. Disposable Teens), they appeal
to the younger crowd who are used to catchy tunes; that and Manson always
has had the pop-y aspect of his music (without it he probably wouldn't
be on MTV). The second track, for example, is slow, hard, and still you
are able to sing / scream along. The sound is hard- rock, with synthesizers
and cool effects. Manson's voice is the main attraction; it is velvety
and attractive. The guitar is not always as recognizable as the hard bass,
but it is there, the undertone for the whole sound. Manson wants you to
be scared, especially because the lyrics hit so close to home. Despite
these contradictions, the music is - as always - something worth listening
to. His morbid views, dark effects and creepy voices make for another
crude, yet lovable album. You don't love to hate this guy, you hate to
love him; he scares you while pleasing your ear. Sometimes the shadow
may be your own, you see the truth in between his beats, and quite frankly,
that's scary.
So go out and give in to the shadows, they might help you to remember
that Manson isn't just out there to scare the kids, his movement is truthful,
and the music- while dark- is romantic, and undeniable.
