Megadeth
Risk
Editor's Review:
My oh my, how have the mighty fallen. It's hard to believe that the band
that produced such cutting edge metal classics "99 Ways To Die," "Train
Of Consequences" and "Symphony Of Destruction" is the same band that has
released the new CD titled Risk, a totally riskless venture into mainstream
monotony. Yes, Megadeth's new CD Risk is disappointing, to say the least.
Gone are the grinding metal riffs and clever lyrics, replaced by formula-produced
rock songs that maybe would have been good if they released them in the
'80s at the height of melodic rock's popularity. I said maybe.
You've heard "Crush 'Em" and "Insomnia" on Z-ROC and they both suck.
I just figured that they always play the crappy, corporate, money-making
songs first and that the rest of the CD would be a lot better. I was wrong.
Risk's best cut, the 6-minute plus "Prince Of Darkness," is intriguing
but never builds to anything powerful. "Seven" is a rougher, bluesy track
a la old AC/DC but the repetition of the chorus at the end kills it. Then
there is the last song "Time: The End" which contains the CD's best, heaviest
riff. The problem is that it is only two-and-a-half minutes long.
What's up with Dave Mustaine and company? I used to long for the next
cool, crazy Megadeth tune, and now that time is no more. The only risk
taken by the band by releasing Risk is that they are risking losing legions
of fans.
