Nine Inch Nails
Things Falling Apart
Editor's Review:
The genius of Trent Reznor really shines through in his production technique.
He's an okay songwriter and a pretty decent performer, but when it comes
to mixing and remixing, the man knows his shit. Which is why the strategy
he often adopts in releasing records - a pattern that tends to go from
new record to remix record to a few remix singles before it gets back
around to another new record-isn't as annoying as it would be from other
artists.
On Things Falling Apart, Reznor comes at his music from a different
angle again, revisiting works like "Starfuckers Inc.," "The Frail" and
"10 Miles High" with a fresh perspective. Of course, the work is signature
Reznor, a patchwork of dark movements and foreboding beats intertwined
with spaces of deafeningly quite and subtle washes of sonic flotsam and
jetsam. But Reznor doesn't just fiddle with the knobs until he get something
he likes. There are beautiful passages of soft music engineered to run
into heavy-hitting and chaotic parts that teem with explosive energy and
emotional power. Sure, this isn't new stuff, but if you're a fan of Reznor
and Nine Inch Nails, this is something you should pick up.
